William “Bill” Glendinning passed away on May 20, 2024, at the age of 98 years old, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, due to health complications. He was married to Viola (Marceliussen) Glendinning for 71 years (deceased June 17, 2020). They lived in South Bristol for the last 37 years. Bill had two brothers, James and Albert; and his parents, James and Angelina (Callaghan) Glendinning (all deceased).
Bill was born in West New York, NJ on Jan. 23, 1926 and lived in Middletown, NJ up until his retirement from the Fort Monmouth Hexagon Labs, Eatontown, NJ (1954-1987). Bill served in the Navy during WWII on the USS Randolph Aircraft Carrier (CV 15) (Jan. 22, 1944 to May 5, 1946).
Bill is survived by his seven children, William Olaf, Priscilla Christine, James Edwin, Timothy Andrew, Brigette Ann, Shawn Ashley, and Tor Erin. There are a total of 33 grandchildren/great-grandchildren.
Bill was a highly recognized electrical engineer and a KOL in the microchip lithography field. His works involved Submicron patterning lithography, concerning direct-write electron: beam backscatter distortion/automated electronic device measurement metrology, overlay error metrology, simplified e-beam peripheral writing, and X-ray mask pattern distortions. He served as president of the IEEE chapter in New Jersey, was a contributing writer on many articles in the microchip development, acquired 22 patents, and was the editor of the Handbook on VLSC Lithography.
Bill served on the Monmouth Arts Council, NJ assisting on projects (1965-1980), assisted on the PTA, Middletown, NJ, member of the Boy Scouts of America, treasurer of the Second Congregational Church, South Bristol, and assisted on the South Bristol Library Building Committee.
Bill enjoyed the outdoors, spending time on Lake Pemaquid, Nobleboro, and the family camp. An avid snow skier, boating, fishing, and always enjoying his family for over 70 years along with his one and only love – wife, Viola.
A time of visitation will be held from 4-6pm, on Friday, May 24, 2024 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home in Damariscotta. A family service will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 10am, also at the funeral home. All are welcome.
