The Rev. Dr. Byron Stuhlman

The Rev. Dr. Byron David Stuhlman, son of Dr. Byron C. Stuhlman and Margaret Evelyn (Williams) Stuhlman, brother of the late James Lee Stuhlman, and husband of the late Hester Catherine (Krusen) Stuhlman, died in hospice care in Scarborough, ME on the morning of July 18, 2026. He was born on June 8, 1941 in Dayton, OH.  

Bryon graduated from Oakwood High School in Dayton in 1959.  He then attended Yale University, graduating magna cum laude, phi beta kappa, in 1963, and received his S.T.B., cum laude, from General Theological Seminary in New York in 1966. He completed his Ph.D. at Duke University in 1991. He was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1966, a priest in 1967, and served as a curate at Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford, CT, before moving to Bridgewater, CT in 1971, where he was Rector of St. Marks Church and the Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury in nearby Sherman.  While studying for his doctorate, he was a priest associate of St. Philip’s Church in Durham, NC.  He then taught as a visiting professor at Hamilton College and was a priest associate at St. James’ Church in Clinton, NY.  Later, he became interim minister at Emmanuel Church in Norwich, NY, rector at Grace Church in Waterville, NY, and an adjunct professor at General Theological Seminary.

He and Hester had summered in Maine since 1969.  They had owned a home in Round Pond since 1983 and retired there full-time in 2007.  Byron was a member of St. Andrew’s Church in Newcastle, and a board member of the Friends of Colonial Pemaquid and the Round Pond Schoolhouse Association.  He was the former president of Coastal Senior College, where he also taught courses.  Byron had a deep interest in liturgical history and was the author of six books and several scholarly articles.  He was a deeply humanistic man who participated in Civil Rights marches in Montgomery, AL and Washington, D.C.; he was an early advocate for women’s ordination in the Episcopal Church and also served on the Church’s inclusive language committee for the Book of Common Prayer. 

He is survived by his son Dr. Jonathan Daniel Stuhlman, his wife Dr. Megan Williams Stuhlman, and their children Justin Williams Stuhlman and Finnian George Stuhlman, of Charlotte, NC.  He is also survived by his two nephews, Luther and Bradley Stuhlman; his sister-in-law, Jennifer Kenna, and her sons Timothy, Eric, and Brian Kenna.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Church in Newcastle, on Sunday, August 9 at 2:00pm and will be live-streamed and archived on their Facebook page.  In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Episcopal Relief and Development, 815 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10017; or St Andrew’s Church, P.O.
