OBITUARY Print

On Sunday, April 11, 2021, Jeremy Robert Smit, loving husband and father of 3 children, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 42.

Jeremy was born on April 30, 1978 in Fort Collins, Colorado, to Kevin Smit and Shirley Riewerts. He spent the earliest part of his childhood in Loveland, Colorado and moved with his family to Biddeford, Maine, when he was 8 years old. There, he attended Biddeford High where he met several of his lifelong friends and his loving wife and best friend, April.

Jeremy had a passion for photography that was instilled in him by his family. He carried on that legacy for many years. His talents recently culminated in one of his photographs titled, “Joshua Needles”, being displayed and featured at the Boothbay Region Art Foundation’s 2021 Maine Photography Show and Exhibition Catalog.

Jeremy was a venturesome and curious soul. He was always ready for a planned or spontaneous adventure. Some of the most memorable are road trips on the Harley, camping, traveling across the country to California, sailing, and hiking Mt. Katahdin.

Jeremy loved his family intensely, and his main goal in life was to care for them. He was a fierce provider and protector. He was a beloved husband, father, and friend to all who encountered him.

Jeremy is survived by his wife, April; his 3 children, Karlee, Madison and Gerrit; his parents, Kevin and Shirley; and his siblings, Janelle and Jonathan.

A private funeral and graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 22nd. A public memorial service is planned for 1pm, on Saturday, April 24, at the family home at 392 Jones Woods Rd. Newcastle, Maine.  All are welcome to join in this gathering to celebrate Jeremy’s life.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543.  Condolences, and messages for his family, may be expressed by visiting: www.StrongHancock.com.

When receiving our package from Jeremy, it was one of our highlights of the day! With his smile and hello,  as kindness was his only way... So happy and so cheerful as such a delivery guy,  Now, the Loss of you is tearful, as we wonder why? You will be remembered, to all ,who shared your daily grace. As our well-known delivery guy who would share his kindness and smiling face! God bless you Jeremy!  our thoughts and prayers go out to your family!

my very old dog ruby sleeps by the front door most of the day so when a delivery truck arrives, she can sit up with her head just peeking into the bottom window of the door to see who it is.  usually she just sits and looks.  whenever jeremy came by, though, she sat up, looked and wagged her tail furiously.  not a sound, just a vigorous wag and that smile dogs have.  i noticed him mugging to her through the door one day and finally understood why she loved seeing him so much.  he was a really nice guy.  ruby and i will both miss him and offer our sincerest condolences...

Jeremy. UPS driver, par excellence!!! One of the NICEST people I’ve ever met. He would deliver our wine club shipments. Every once in a while there would be a note on other packages with wines names that he tried and enjoyed. My heart breaks for your family. RIP. You are missed...
