Gardiner Flood Obituary

Gardiner Flood Jr, 83, passed away on the morning August 13 with his family at his side.  Gardiner was born on June 11th, 1936, in Damariscotta, to Leon ”Mickey” and Anna Sargent Flood.

A lifelong Wiscasset resident, he served as Assistant Fire Chief for many years, and also as the Harbor Master. He was the first responder to the “big fire” in 1970 at Ames Supply. He was an avid sportsman, hunter, and skeet shooter in his youth.

In 1959 after working with his father, Mickey, in the family business, Flood’s Hardware, he branched out and became one of Maine's first Outboard Motor Corporation’s dealers. Flood’s Marine and Appliances sold and serviced outboard motors, boats, snowmobiles and lawn equipment. He then purchased the land now occupied by the commercial pier and removed the eyesore of the old creamery, and expanded his shop there.  He employed many local people.

He was crewman and sponsor to #3 Chevy driven by Rig Simmons at Wiscasset speedway in its early days.  In 1981, when his business was displaced by the new Wiscasset Bridge, he moved it to the family home on Flood Ave. Gardiner changed the name to Flood’s Repair as he began to specialize in chain saws and landscaping equipment. A master mechanic, he was well known for his ability to diagnose engine problems within seconds.   As was his wish, he continued to serve his many wonderful customers and friends until he passed.

Gardiner was an avid Red Sox, and Portland Sea Dogs fan, and enjoyed going to the Sea Dogs ball games with is daughter, Johnna. He was also a Patriots and Bruins fan. He enjoyed lighthouses, and touring the coast with his son, Rupert. He was interested in historic vehicles, outboards and equipment. He always read the paper to keep up with current events.   He had a great sense of humor, and compassion with animals.

Gardner was predeceased by his parents; a stillborn son, Leon Gardiner Flood III in 1964; and his adult son, Morgan Gardiner Flood, in 1990.

He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Anna L Flood; his son, Rupert and his wife Rina; his daughter, Johnna and her partner Jamie; as well as three grandchildren, and three great-granddaughters.
